Discussion:
What is Gupta Navaratri?

In the Wikipedia article five different Navaratris are given.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navratri

5. Magha Navaratri: Magha Navaratri, also referred as Gupta Navaratri,
is nine days dedicated to the nine forms of Shakti (Mother Goddess) in
the month of Magha (January–February). Magha Navaratri is observed
during the Magha Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon).

What is the Magha Navaratri? How it is celebrated and do we have to
follow same procedures of Pooja, Chandi Patha, like in Sharan
Navaratri? Kindly reply.

Namaste,

For srividya upAsakAs, there are chiefly 4 navarAtrIs.  They are:

1) syAmala navarAtri - falls on mAgha mAsa (the current one)
2) vArAhi navarAtri - falls on AshADa mAsa
3) vasantha navarAtri - falls on chaitra mAsa
4) sharad navarAtri - falls on ashvija mAsa

While the chief navarAtrIs among the 4 is only 2 (as per dEvi bhAgavata) which are vasantha & sharad. However, some of the sampradAyAs do observe the rest of the 2 also.

So, mAgha navarAtri, being dedicated to shyAmala dEvi, the japa of rAja-shyAmala / mAtangi can be taken (if initiated).  One should perform this upAsana with "veeNa vAdana" which pleases the shyAmala most.  One should perform the sangeeta sEva (especially organize the veeNa vAdana concert and should offer dakSiNa and tAmbula to vaiNikAs).
A vaiNika stee (woman having specialisation in playing veena) should be felicitated (irrespective of varNa) with new clothes and dakSiNa.

The mantra japa should be performed with tAmbUla charvaNa for siddhi.

The mantra japa should be performed with tAmbUla charvaNa for siddhi.
I am reminded of an episode in Sri SyAmAshAstri's (composer who was a
contemporary of Sri Thyagaraja and Muthuswami DikShitar) life centering on
'tAmbUla charvaNa' and the spitting of the red juice on someone. Pl.
relate the story if you recall it.

Once a person was doing great tapas repeating the raajamaatangi moola
mantra near
dhvajastambha of Madurai Meenaakashi Temple. When his punascharana ripened,
Madurai
Meenaakshi Devi appeared before him in the form of a courtesan chewing
betel leaves and
asked him to open his mouth. Enraged that a courtesan dared to ask him to
accept her half
chewed betel leaves he scolded her severely. She went away and asked one
Srinivasa
who was on the service staff of the temple to open his mouth and placed the
half chewed betel
in his mouth. From that day it seems he became a composer of both sangeetha
and sahitya.

Subbarama DIkshitar Narrates this story in Sangeetha Sampradaya Pradarshini
and records one
composition of his in the book.

It was none other than syama sastri's own guru Sri Sangeeta Swami, who was a yati.

Sri Syama Sastri had this habit of chewing paan and tantra shAstra prescribes this
method for getting the grace of syAmala dEvi in order to excel in sangita shAstra.
The rAja syAmala mantra anuSTAna prescribes the mantra anuSTAna with paan in
the mouth for quick siddhi in sangeeta shAstra.  There is a prakriya of propitiating
"ucchiSTa mAtangi" this way.

The rules for syAmala mantra japa include respecting the ladies of lower varNa especially belonging to fishing community; respecting the vaiNikAs, playing of veeNa and worshipping it.

A sign of mantra siddhi is the as soon as the japa purashcharana is performed, a parrot comes to accept the naivEdya which is offered to syAmala.

There is another incident related to "tAmbUla charvaNa" in Kanchipuram.

There was a dumb boy who used to sit in the premises of gAyatri mantapam of Kamakshi Temple.  One day, it so happened that Kamakshi appeared before a certain upAsaka who was doing srividya anuSTAna in the temple.  Mother Kamakshi was chewing betel nut and wanted to put that same ucchiSTa betel nut into the mouth of that upAsaka.  He refused the offer being ucchiSTa.  Immediately, She grace that dumb boy who was sitting under a pillar and thrust forth Her ucchiSTa paan into the mouth of that dumb boy.

And lo ! melodious poetry in the form of 500 slokas gushed forth from his mouth which is known as "Muka Panchashati" and that lad is none other than Muka Sankara.

This is the power of the ucchiSTa tAmbula of Mother Kamakshi !!!!

Thanks. Here is that episode that I had heard long ago:

https://sites.google.com/site/chitrakoota/Home/carnatic-music

// *Sangita* *Swami* instructed him to make the acquaintance of *
Pachimariyam* *Adiyappan* to listen to his scholarly music. *Shyama* *
Shastri* did so, and almost immediately became *Adiyappayya’s* favorite. He
was quite enthralled by the young *Shyama’s* music and even, it is said,
refused to wipe a stain *Shyama* had accidentally caused while chewing
betel leaves from his clothes, saying that it, too, had in it the mysteries
of *Shyama’s* true music (*nija* *sangita*).//

Thanks to Shri D.V.N.Sharma for the other reference.

Namaste Sriram,

How it is possible to do Mantra Japa when chewing Tambula? I cannot
say Mantra properly.

I heard some ladies with babies have habit of chewing Tambula and
spitting the juice into babies mouth. The babies will have good
health. This was practice in my grandmother's time. Now I have not
seen modern mothers do it. The mothers in villages may do it.

In Mahabharata there is one story I cannot remember fully. One Rishi
was praying to Indra. Indra appeared and Rishi asked for boon. He said
he has to get water when he feels thirsty. One day the Rishi was going
in a forest and he was very thirsty. When he remembered the boon one
hunter appeared with a dirty bag tied near his private parts. It was
tied like if he passed urine it could fall in the bag.The hunter
offered him water from the bag. But Rishi thought the water was bad
and did not accept it. Later Indra came and scolded him. That hunter
was Indra in diguise and the water was Amruta. But Rishi refused it.

I cannot say Mantra properly.

///

The basic reason is that japa should be done with "surabhila vadana"
ie., the upAsaka should not have "mukha-durgandha" at the time of japa.
It is a dosha to perform japa with bad breath which incurs the yOgini shApa.

The pramANa is from tripurArNava tantra as:

japAdau mukha-durgandhO dEvatA shApamApnuyAt
atO durgandhanAshAya tAmbUlAdiva niSyatE

(vide ref: tripurArNava tantra - 5th ullAsa - 6th sloka)

Another reason being, mantra siddhi is easily achieved if performed
with ucchiSTa mukha.  For eg., ucchiSTa mAtangi, ucchiSTa gaNapati etc.

For ucchiSTa mAtangi, the tAmbula should be kept in the mouth and japa should
be done.  With the repetition of the mantra, the tAmbula rasa has the power to
propitiate the dEvata.  As regards the ucchiSTa gaNapati, Sri Bhaskararaya Makhin
explained in his work *khadyOta* (a commentary on gaNapati sahasranAma) that
this form of gaNapati is worshipped and simultaneously eating mOdakAs (which is
ucchiSTa).

So, these are the tAntric forms of worship and shiSTAchAris are not supposed to
do these.

For us, the meaning should be taken as *ut-shiSTa* ie., the residue or the adhiSTAna tattva.

tripurArNavatantram is available from sampUrNAnanda saMskR^ita University.
If you write to chaukhamba, then may confirm it's availability.

I've no idea about khadyota.

In addition to it,
I heard that tR^ich-bhAskara of bhAskararAya makhin was printed by Ananda
Ashrama saMsthA of puNe. Is it possible to get any photocopy of scan of
this book.

It is available from some university libraries in the United States. It
has been a while since I looked at it. It is a very short commentary in
verse form, and does little more than give the simple meaning of the names.

Whatever the importance of this commentary is, is another thing.
I just found that khadyota was recently, i.e. in 1991, published by prAchya
prakAshana of vArANasI. All the books published by them are available
through chaukhambha.

Have a look at the foot link here :

Here is a post in ambaa-l group where Satish mentions about this book:

If anyone here knows kannaDa, then please see this link too :
