Hare Krishna. As some of you may be aware, Sri Devanathan was researching
in to Narasimha Tapani Upanishad. It is said that it has commentary
attributed to Sankara or Gaudapada. I would like to know what scholars on
this forum think. Also, can someone cite references to Gopala Tapani
Upanishad in Advaita tradition?

It is interesting, today we will be discussing the slokas in the panchakosha viveka of the Panchadasi (III:12-16) in our class. In the 16th sloka Shree Vidyaaranya refers to several upanishadic declarations and one of the Upanishads referenced is this Narasimha Purvataapani Upanishad besides Bri. Up., Mundaka, Katha, and swetaswatara) - this is with reference to Swayam joyti aspect and also the illumination of the entire universe. This is the first time I heard about this Upanishad. Would be happy to learn more about it.

Thank you Sriram. Shri Sadanandaji, namaskarams and your humility despite being a respected scholar and teacher is pleasing. Sri Devanathan researched in to this upanishad. If you know someone in Chinmaya Mission in Toronto, they can get his unfinished papers from the University.

Any reference to Gopala Tapani? Niranjan, did Madhusudana refer to this anywhere? I know Prabhodananda, Jiva, Visvanath and Baladev comment on Gopala Tapani. Visvanath refers to one Visveswara favourably. This upanishad teaches a mantra to achieve material ends and see Krishna.

Hare Krishna. It is a very useful information. That means that Madhusudana
was aware of Gopala Tapani and Narsaimha Tapani as it is mentioned in
Muktika. In 1.28, Jiva refers to Visveswara's (who I think is Madhusudana's
guru) commentary.
Prabhu Harekrishna!
Among the minor Upanisads, Madhusudana refers to the Muktiko in GD on BhG
6.36, Annapurna on BhG 4.35 etc. We need to see his other thelogical works.
With best rgs,
Niranjan

Namaste,

Acharya Sankara wrote a wonderful commentary on Narasimha Purva & Uttara Tapini Upanishad.

Padmapada was upasaka of Narasimha who did mantra purashcharana in Ahobilam
and had Narasimha Sakshatkaram.

Narasimha holds special place in Sankara Parampara especially in Sringeri. Also,
all the acharyas of Sringeri worship Narasimha Salagrama.

Probably, that is the reason Sri Vidyaranya has special affinity towards Narasimha
and it's 32 lettered mantra in anuSTup chandas. The narasimha dhyAna sloka related to
this anuSTup chandas is very typical in the sense that the deity is portrayed
as "hari-harAtmaka" ie., though Narasimha is viSNu swarupa, He holds the ayudha
called "pinAka" which is the weapon held by Siva.

The dhyAna sloka itself displays the abhEda tattva between Hari & Hara.

Namaste Rajaram ji,

The moment you took the name of our beloved Devanathan,
i am choked with emotion.

He was a great scholar and was a great upasaka of shODasha-bhAhu
nArasimha mUrti who was initiated into the secrets of Narasimha upAsana
from none other than Br.Sri.R.Krishnamurty Sastrigal.

He was hardly late 20s or early 30s and it is most unfortunate that
God took him away from us.

Every time i remember him, i get disturbed.

Pls see that his papers and manuscripts are published in some good journal.

Hare Krishna. There is also a commentary on Gopala Tapani Upanishad by
Visveswara, who I think Madhusudana's guru. Other commentaries are by Jiva,
Prabhodananda, Visvanatha and Baladeva. Apart from telling the famous
story where Yamuna gives way on asserting that Krishna is a brahmachari
and Durvasa had not eaten (after a big feast), the upanishad teaches an
eighteen syllable mantra. Though the gaudiya vaishnava acharyas have
commented on this upanishad, they dont give this mantra as diksha. I am
told that there is an atharva veda sakha in vogue in Gujarath which has
this upanishad. I would like to know if any one knows of the sakha and if
there is a practice among advaita acharyas to teach this eighteen syllabled
mantra in the upanishad. It fulfills all material desires and Brahma
creates the universe with this, according to the upanishad. For one who is
without desires, this mantra gives sAkshAtkAram of Sri Krishna and His
abode.

I would advice you to meet Mahamahopadhyaya Haridas Sastry Ji Maharaj of Brindavan. Maharaj is a great krishnOpAsaka and hails from the direct lineage of Rupa Goswami. He stays in Kaliadah of Brindavan. An octogenarian who mastered purva mimamsa, jagadisha bhatta & gadAdhara bhatta nyAya in early teens itself. A great tArkika and vyAkaraNa shAstra paNDita.

Having mastered the entire shAstra, his only sAdhana now is "gO-sEva" right from morning to evening. He performs the gO-sEva just as King Dilip performed in Raghuvamsam.

As per gaudiya vaishnavism, there is an eternal gO-lOka and the objective of the gaudiyas is to attain that gO-lOka and participate in "Eternal Rasa Lila" amidst rAdha and kriSNa. Sri Haridas Maharaj Ji in sUkSma shareeram takes part in this rAsa lila.

You are gauDiya vaishnava and i would advice you to approach Maharaj Ji in Brindavan and seek clarifications.

Partly reading gaudiya vaishnava siddhAnta and partly reading advaita siddhAnta would create confusion in the mind whose objectives and philosophies are entirely different.

Either you study gauDiya siddhAnta or you study advaita siddhAnta.

RV: He is a great person anda devotee of Krisnna and his service to cows is
laudable but some of his interpretations of shastras do not stand the test
of logic. For example, he believes that there is absolutely no animal
sacrifice or even war in vedic yajnas. The introduction of these in smrti
or bhashyas is degradation. I disagree with that and am only concerned with
truth.

RV: There are a some devotees engaged in Krishna lIlA, others in Siva or
Sakti etc. Anyway, the objective of a gaudiya vaishnava is not go to goloka
but to be devoted to Krishna without expectation of results birth after
birth. Sri Krishna Caitanya sings "mama janmani janmanIsvare bhavatad
bhakti ahaituki tvayi" (let me devoted to you birth after birth"
Bhaktivinod sings "kita janma hau jata tuwa dasa bahir mukha brahma janme
nAhi Asa" (expressing preference over birth as a worm devoted to Krishna
rather than as Brahma not devoted). There are many philosophical works of
the acharyas which talk about this.

The existence of an eternal loka within vyavahara is supported by Advaita
tradition also. I have not only read the texts that support it but also
reviewed with Sri Mani Dravid Sastrigal.

RV: In our traditions, there was eclecticism. As Thiruvalluvar said,
"Whoever says whatever, determining the truth thereof is intelligence".
Kalidasa gives a similar quote which Sringeri Periyava quotes.
